WHY - Because sometimes it just needs to.
HOW -  Nature of this story world. Koontz' "Carnival",  Barker's "Imajica", Hamilton's "Blake" series.



CONFLICT - Breaking up of the family. Why don't Mommy and Daddy love us? Is it our fault?" Plus, supernatural changings.

    Enhanced senses are next indicator of something.
         Going outside to sleep because of reek of alcohol, sound of snoring.
    Notice changes in behavior, but not extremity

Then one day they're just gone.

     Why is he chasing her? It's not her, it's the pack. They're calling him. But they need him to be stronger. That's why they (convince / cajole) her to leave. He needs to be stronger, bring more to the table. The Pack needs to be stronger, for whatever the conflict is. The beta is the one who puts out the call, and convinces the other members to add their voices to his. Alpha doesn't know he is "tracking" them.
